It was a sunny day on the 12th
of August, 2006. My friend Yoshiko and I had decided
that we wanted to go to Jasper and see the mountains (her and her husband were
visiting
us from Edmonton for the weekend), do some sightseeing, shopping, and then head
out to
the famous Miette Hot Springs for a dip in the healing waters.

In the morning, just before we left, I
went on the internet bank account and made sure that
I had put a healthy amount of money on the debit account I use for spending
money, and then
off we went.
Yoshiko and I had a fabulous time. We
admired the mountains, we did some shopping, and then we
went for sushi at a wonderful Japanese restaurant called Denjiro, in the heart
of Jasper. We were stuffed!
(And I even had ice cream after…sorry Curves diet…will be back on the
program again on Monday).
After we left Jasper, we decided to go
see the famous Atahabasca Falls, where we took lots of pictures
felt the mist from the water dance upon our faces, and even built our very own
Inukshuk!!
Then it was time to head up to Miette
Hot springs for a bite to eat and a dip in the hot pool.
What a scenic drive it was up the mountain. And Yoshiko said she hadn’t seen a
deer in ages
so she got to see a deer and was so happy!
We went to the Ashlar Ridge Café
first, because by this time we were absolutely starving and felt
that we needed some good sustenance to be able to sit in the hot springs without
passing out.
So we went in and ordered a burger, a chicken cordon bleu, and some coffee and
tea to warm up
since there was quite the chill in the air. And I put some coins in the tip jar
like I always do, to say
thanks for a good meal.

When I used my debit card in the machine, it would not work – it said
insufficient funds.
I said let’s try it again, and it still would not work. And I never carry cash
on me (more out of
habit now, than anything else) – pretty funny for someone who teaches people
about money
beliefs, and how they can be changed (lesson has since been learned)!
Well, at this point I was feeling
quite lost, not knowing what to say, and how to act because I knew
I had money on my card, but without the charge going through, there was to be no
burger and
chicken cordon bleu..
Then, Jack, the owner of the Ashlar
Ridge Café, looked at me with a smile, and said;
"Well, the burgers are already on the grill, and your meal isn’t going to
break me, and put
me out of business, so go ahead and come up to the grill and get them when they’re
done."
Well, talk about GRATITUDE
on my part. Here was a man who did not know me from
Adam,
offering to pick up the tab for me and my friend Yoshiko. He had no reason to do
this for us,
except for out of the kindness of his Heart.
Yoshiko and I ate our food
(actually, more like gulped it down, because we were so hungry)
and I was sitting at the table
feeling more and more in awe of how we had been provided for
(I had just given my first ever true Tithe two weeks before this), when we were
(seemingly)
without resources. I had to literally take big
breaths of air to contain myself – which Yoshiko
found a bit disconcerting, as she kept asking me; "Are you ok, Ulrika?"
I said I was fine, but,
internally, wow, was it hard to hold the tears back for me.
And when we stood up and carried our
tray back to the café counter, the rivers of tears welled up
in my eyes, and they would not, and could not, be stopped. And at that point, it
was tough to communicate
to them how much their act of kindness meant to me. The friendly girl behind the
counter (I believe her name
was Shelly) said "Oh" and came up and gave me a hug. And then she said
to Jack "Look, she’s crying."
And I got a hug from Jack, too. And they both said it was ok. I said I’d be
paying them back as soon as I
could get to my bank on Monday. They still said it was fine. I think, at that
point, they realized how much
what they had done really meant to my friend and I.
So, as we walked out of the café, me
still crying a river, and Yoshiko, now understanding that I was
crying tears of joy and gratitude, I felt the most amazing connection to God. It
was the strongest
connection I have ever felt in my whole life.
The interesting thing was that just the
day before, I had been asking to have a really strong
connection to God, and be shown, without a doubt, that he exists in my life.
The way he chose to show me his
omnipresence was through the loving actions of
The Ashlar Ridge Café Angels.
With deeply profound Gratitude,
